Does Safari support transparent WebM?
Published · 0:27
No. Safari plays WebM video but drops the VP9 alpha channel, so transparent areas render opaque. As of October 2026, the WebKit patch for VP9 alpha (bug 275908, pull request #64837) is still open. Serve HEVC with alpha in a .mov to Safari and VP9 WebM to Chrome, Edge and Firefox.
