Discord Animated Server Icon: Requirements, Size and GIF Tips

A Discord server can use an animated GIF as its icon once it reaches Server Boost Level 1, which takes 2 Boosts. Discord's API documentation describes the icon as a 1024×1024 PNG, JPEG or GIF image, animated only when the server has that perk. Keep the logo centered, because Discord rounds the icon's corners off.

Key takeaways

  • Animated server icons are a Level 1 Server Boost perk (2 Boosts); Nitro on its own does not unlock them for a server.
  • Upload a square GIF. Discord's API docs describe the icon as 1024×1024; the help center publishes no pixel or file size limit.
  • Keep the logo inside a centered circle with some padding, since the corners do not show.
  • Animated banners are separate: a static banner needs Level 2 and an animated banner Level 3.

Already have a character or logo? See your character in real app screens: splash, onboarding, loading and empty-state screens. It's free, runs in your browser and uploads nothing.

What do you need for an animated Discord server icon?

A boosted server and a GIF. Discord's Server Boosting FAQ lists "Animated Server Icon" as a Level 1 perk, and Level 1 takes 2 Boosts. The other image perks come at higher levels:

Boost levelBoostsImage perk
Level 12Animated server icon
Level 27Static server banner
Level 314Animated server banner

Boosts are given to the server by its members. Nitro also gives an individual an animated avatar on their own profile, but that is a personal perk; it does not let a server use an animated icon.

In the API, the same rule shows up as a guild feature: ANIMATED_ICON means the "guild has access to set an animated guild icon."

What size should an animated Discord server icon be?

Square, and large enough to stay sharp. Discord's API documentation for changing a server describes the icon as a "base64 1024x1024 png/jpeg/gif image for the guild icon (can be animated gif when the server has the ANIMATED_ICON feature)."

Discord's help center does not publish a pixel size or a maximum file size for server icons that we could find. Many third-party guides recommend 512×512, which is a reasonable target for a GIF because file size grows quickly with dimensions. Practical settings:

  • Dimensions: 512×512 or 1024×1024, square.
  • Frame rate: 12 to 15 fps is enough at icon size.
  • Length: a seamless loop of a few seconds.
  • Background: solid. An icon is displayed on dark and light themes, and a solid background avoids GIF's jagged transparent edges.

If an upload fails, shorten the loop, lower the frame rate or reduce the palette before shrinking the dimensions.

How do you keep a logo readable in Discord's round icon?

Design for a circle. Discord's apps show server icons with their corners rounded off, and the server list displays them small, so:

  • Center the logo and keep everything important inside a circle that fills about the middle of the square, with padding to the edge.
  • Use the mark, not the wordmark. Text becomes unreadable at server-list size; a symbol or logo character reads instantly.
  • Keep motion inside the circle. A hop or a squash that moves the logo toward a corner will be clipped.
  • Make the first frame complete. If the icon is ever seen as a still, the first frame should look like your normal logo.
  • Do not flash. The icon sits on screen while people read and chat. WCAG 2.3.1 sets a limit of three flashes in any one-second period.

Discord does not document the exact crop, so check the icon in the server list after saving, on both a dark and a light theme.

How do you make an animated Discord server icon from your logo?

  1. Animate the logo as a square loop. A gentle idle (a bob, a breathe, a blink) suits an icon better than a big intro, because it repeats all day.
  2. Export a square MP4 on the background color you want behind the logo.
  3. Convert to GIF at 512×512 with a palette built from the clip:
ffmpeg -i icon.mp4 \
  -vf "fps=15,scale=512:512:flags=lanczos,split[a][b];[a]palettegen[p];[b][p]paletteuse" \
  -loop 0 server-icon.gif
  1. Upload it where you change the server icon in Server Settings, save, and check it in the server list.

The same loop can become a server emoji if you shrink it under Discord's 256 KB emoji limit; see Discord emoji and sticker specs. More on GIF quality in how to turn a logo into a GIF.

Why is my Discord server icon not animated?

  • The server is below Level 1. Animation is a boost perk. Check the server's boost status first.
  • The file is not a GIF. Discord's API docs list PNG, JPEG and GIF uploads for the icon, and only a GIF can be animated there. An animated WebP or APNG will not do.
  • The GIF has one frame. A PNG renamed to .gif, or a GIF exported from a single still, will not move. Open it in a browser to check.
  • The upload was rejected. If Discord refuses the file, make it smaller (fewer frames, fewer colors, shorter loop) and try again.

Can Charmotion make an animated Discord server icon?

It can make the loop. Charmotion animates one logo or mascot image into 17 animations, including 10 seamless looping moods, delivered as 1080×1080 MP4 and 480 px GIF previews in every set. Both are on a solid background, which suits an icon because it fills the circle. Use the 480 px GIF as it is, or convert the MP4 to 512×512 with the command above. Animations work best on logo marks and characters; a text-only logo moves as a whole and stays hard to read at icon size.

How to set an animated Discord server icon

  1. Reach Boost Level 1. Get the server to Server Boost Level 1 (2 Boosts), which unlocks the animated server icon.
  2. Animate a square loop. Make a short, seamless square loop of your logo mark with everything inside a centered circle.
  3. Convert to GIF. Export a 512×512 or 1024×1024 GIF at 12 to 15 fps with a palette built from the clip.
  4. Upload and check. Upload the GIF as the server icon in Server Settings, save, and check it in the server list on dark and light themes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Nitro for an animated Discord server icon?

No, not by itself. The server needs Server Boost Level 1, which takes 2 Boosts. Boosts are given by the server's members; a Nitro subscription includes 2 Boosts, so one member with Nitro can boost a server to Level 1, but Nitro alone does not unlock an animated icon for a server nobody has boosted.

What happens to an animated server icon if boosts expire?

Discord's help pages we checked do not say exactly what happens to an existing animated icon. Since animation is a Level 1 perk, expect to lose it if the server drops below Level 1, and keep a static PNG version ready.

Can a Discord server icon be a transparent GIF?

It can, but GIF transparency is on or off per pixel, so soft edges look jagged on both dark and light themes. A solid background color fills the round icon cleanly and usually looks better.
