An animated GIF is the safest way to put a moving logo in a presentation: PowerPoint plays GIFs in Slide Show on Windows and Mac, and Google Slides accepts them as images. Keynote also plays transparent HEVC and ProRes movies on macOS 10.15 and later. Transparent video in PowerPoint and Google Slides is not documented, so test before presenting.

Key takeaways

  • Keynote: transparent HEVC-alpha or ProRes 4444 MOV works on macOS 10.15+; H.264 turns transparency black.
  • PowerPoint: MP4 (H.264) is recommended, MOV and WebM also play; GIFs play in Slide Show on Windows and Mac but not in PowerPoint for the web.
  • Google Slides: video only from YouTube, a URL or Google Drive; GIFs insert like images.
  • Transparent video playback in PowerPoint and Google Slides is not documented, so use a GIF or a logo on the slide's background color.

Already have a character or logo? See your character in real app screens: splash, onboarding, loading and empty-state screens. It's free, runs in your browser and uploads nothing.

Can you put an animated logo in a presentation?

Yes, in all three apps, but each handles video and transparency differently. What the official documentation says:

How do you add a transparent animated logo in Keynote?

  1. Use a MOV with HEVC alpha or ProRes 4444. Apple's Keynote guide warns that "H.264 doesn't support alpha channels, so transparency is converted to a black background," so an MP4 will show a box.
  2. Drag the MOV onto the slide, or choose Insert, then Choose.
  3. In the Format sidebar's Movie tab, set it to start on click or automatically, and turn on looping if it is an idle loop.
  4. Present a test run on the Mac you will use. Apple notes that macOS versions earlier than 10.15 show whatever is encoded behind the transparency, usually black.

Watch for app updates. In Apple's community forums, users reported that in Keynote 13.2 a transparent ProRes 4444 movie showed a white background, and a reply called it "a known fault" in that version. If transparency breaks after an update, test the file in another app before re-exporting it.

How do you add an animated logo in PowerPoint?

For a GIF: choose Insert, then Pictures, and pick the GIF. Microsoft says animated GIFs play in Slide Show on Windows and Mac, but "PowerPoint for the web can't play animated GIFs." The GIF loops according to how it was made, so export it to play once if you want it to rest on the logo.

For video: choose Insert, then Video. Microsoft recommends "MPEG-4 with Advanced Video Coding (H.264) and Advanced Audio Coding (AAC)," and also lists QuickTime .mov and WebM. Set it to start automatically in the Playback tab.

For transparency, do not rely on video. Microsoft's page on supported formats says nothing about alpha playback. Its Insider blog on exporting transparent videos from PowerPoint for Mac warns that such a video "may not play with transparency in PowerPoint for Windows or PowerPoint for the web," and a Microsoft Q&A thread reported a transparent background that turned black in Slide Show. Use a GIF, or a video with a background that matches the slide.

How do you add an animated logo in Google Slides?

As a GIF. Choose Insert, then Image, and upload the GIF or insert it by URL; Google's help says you can "insert a link to your image or insert a .gif."

Video is more limited: Google Slides inserts video from "Search YouTube, By URL, Google Drive," with no upload from your computer. Google documents no transparency for video, so a transparent logo video is not an option here.

For a logo on a colored slide, make the GIF on that exact color rather than with GIF transparency, which leaves jagged edges.

Why does my animated logo show a black or white box on the slide?

  • The file is an MP4. H.264 has no alpha channel, so the background is solid. Re-export as MOV with HEVC alpha or ProRes 4444 for Keynote, or as a GIF for PowerPoint and Google Slides.
  • The app ignores alpha. PowerPoint and Google Slides do not document alpha video playback. A transparent file may look right while editing and wrong in Slide Show.
  • A known bug. Keynote 13.2 showed transparent ProRes movies on white, per Apple's community forums.
  • The GIF was flattened. A GIF exported without transparency carries its background color. Match that color to the slide instead.

The free transparent video checker shows whether the file itself has transparency, which tells you whether to fix the file or the app.

Should an animated logo loop on a slide?

On a title or closing slide, play it once and let it rest on the logo: a looping logo pulls attention from the speaker. On a holding slide shown before a talk starts, a calm loop is fine.

  • Keep it short. A launch intro of a couple of seconds is enough.
  • Do not flash. WCAG 2.3.1 sets a limit of three flashes in any one-second period, and a projected slide is large.
  • Test on the presenting machine. Video and GIF playback depend on the app version and platform, especially when moving between Mac, Windows and the web.

Which Charmotion files work in presentations?

For Keynote, the paid plans' MOV with HEVC alpha drops onto any slide background. For PowerPoint and Google Slides, use the GIF or the MP4, which every set includes; both come on a solid background, so they look clean on a slide of the same color. The roughly 2.6 second launch intro, which ends on your resting logo, suits title slides; the idle loops suit holding slides.

How to add an animated logo to a presentation

  1. Pick the file for the app. Use a transparent HEVC-alpha or ProRes 4444 MOV for Keynote, and a GIF for PowerPoint and Google Slides.
  2. Insert it. Drag the file onto the slide or use the app's Insert menu: Picture or Image for GIFs, Video or Movie for MOV and MP4.
  3. Set playback. Choose whether it starts automatically and whether it loops; title slides usually play once.
  4. Match the background. If the file is not transparent, make sure its background color matches the slide.
  5. Test in presenting mode. Run Slide Show or Play on the computer you will present from, since transparency and GIF playback vary by platform.

Frequently asked questions

Can PowerPoint play a video with a transparent background?

Microsoft does not document it. Its Insider blog warns that transparent videos exported from PowerPoint for Mac may not play with transparency in PowerPoint for Windows or the web, and users have reported black backgrounds in Slide Show. A GIF, or a video on the slide's color, is safer.

Do animated GIFs play in PowerPoint for the web?

No. Microsoft says PowerPoint for the web can't play animated GIFs, so the GIF shows as a still image in Slide Show there. They do play in PowerPoint for Windows and Mac.

Can I upload a video file to Google Slides from my computer?

Not directly. Google Slides inserts video from YouTube, a URL or Google Drive, so upload the file to Drive first. For a logo, an animated GIF inserted as an image is simpler and loops on the slide.
